HISTORY OF TOMARI
Head
instructor and founder of Tomari, Sensei Don Arnott has a background in many
Martial Arts. As a youth he trained
Judo and boxing, at 14 years old he competed nationally in Free Style Wrestling.
As a teen Don also trained extensively in Shotokan Karate, Kenpo Karate,
Tae Kwon Do, Boxing, and Okinawa weapons .
In 1973 after winning the Brown belt division at the Western Canadian
Karate Championships in Regina Saskatchewan at age 17, Don was awarded
his Black Belt by Lindon Bateson (his instructor at
that time), Ed Bateson, Dwight Sheer and Emil Repack, 4 of the top Martial Arts instructors
in Canada. At age 18 Don defeated
World Martial Arts Champion Alex Kwok of Hong Kong.
In 1976 Don trained with Marine Force Recon Sensei Coffen in Hand-to-Hand
combat and Kickboxing. In 1979 Don
opened his own Dojo and called it Tomari after the Okinawa city Tomari that historically
allowed various fighting styles to train together.
The
Tomari training has proved very effective not only for self-defense and physical
conditioning but also in the ring. Don's Tomari Dojo has produced 4 Professional World
Champions, 8 World, 10 North American and 12 National Amateur Champions in
kickboxing. Don has been honored
with the Instructor of the year award from the World Kickboxing Association.
Don
spent two years receiving guidance in boxing from Boxing Hall of Fame Legend
Eddie Futch, trainer of 21 Pro Boxing World Champions as they co trained Don's
student, Pro boxing Canadian Heavyweight Champion Shane Sutcliffe.
Don has now incorporated the training and fighting methods of Mr. Futch
in what he teaches. In 1998 Don personally trained Elite Commandos from the US
Forces and has twice been invited to war torn Beirut to train Special Forces.
